A two-post lift is the most-bought machine on our floor and the one people worry about most after it is bolted down. That worry is healthy. Here is what the first year looks like when it goes right, in the order it happens.
1. The slab before the lift
Every two-post lift we sell wants the same thing under it: concrete at least 4 inches thick, 3,000 psi, cured 28 days, with no cracks or seams inside the anchor footprint. Most 10,000 lb lifts specify 4 inches; 12,000 lb and up want 6. If you do not know what is under the bay, drill a test hole before the crate arrives. It is a ten-minute job that avoids the one problem we cannot fix by phone.
- Ceiling: 12 feet clears a clear-floor 10,000 lb lift with a pickup on it. Lower ceilings want a baseplate model.
- Width: a 12-foot bay is the practical minimum with the doors open on both sides.
- Power: 220V single phase for the power unit. Have the outlet in before delivery.
2. Install day and the first 48 hours
Columns plumb, anchors torqued to the number in the manual (usually 85 to 150 ft-lb depending on the anchor), cables equalized so both carriages rise together and lock at the same height. Bleed the cylinder, cycle the lift empty ten times, then with a light vehicle, then with the heaviest thing you own. Listen for the locks clicking in at every stop. If one side clicks late, the equalizer cables need a turn.
| When | Check | What good looks like |
|---|---|---|
| Day 1 | Anchor torque, column plumb, cable tension | Torque holds on a re-check; carriages lock together within a quarter inch |
| Week 1 | Re-torque anchors after ten loaded cycles | No movement on the wrench; no dust at the baseplate |
| Month 1 | Hydraulic fluid level, hose fittings, arm restraints | Fluid at the line, fittings dry, restraint gears engage on every arm |
| Every month | Ten-minute walkaround (below) | Nothing new since last month |
| Year 1 | Cable wear, sheave bearings, lock ladders | No broken strands; sheaves spin free; lock faces unworn |
3. The ten-minute monthly walkaround
Same order every month, so nothing gets skipped. Anchors: put a wrench on two of them. Cables: run a rag along each one and feel for broken strands. Hydraulics: look at the floor under the power unit and at every fitting. Arm restraints: swing each arm and confirm the gear teeth drop in. Locks: raise to the first stop and lower onto the locks with a vehicle on, listen for both sides. Pads: replace any rubber that has split or gone hard.
4. The two habits that keep it safe
Lower onto the locks, every time
Never work under a lift held by hydraulics alone. Raise past the nearest lock, lower until you hear both sides seat, and only then walk under. It takes three seconds and it is the single habit that separates twenty-year lifts from insurance claims.
Set the arms before you lift, not after
Pads on the manufacturer's lift points, arms restrained, then raise six inches and shake the vehicle. If it rocks, lower and reset. Most lift accidents in home garages are a vehicle set on the wrong points, not a lift failure.
5. What the warranty covers in year one
Every lift is backed for a year, parts and labor, from the date of delivery. Power units, cylinders, columns, carriages and the lock system are covered. Pads, cables after normal wear and damage from setting the vehicle wrong are not. Claims go to warranty@atlasgroundandlift.com with the model, serial number and a photo, and are answered within 1 to 2 business days. Extend it to two, three or four years before the first year ends and the terms carry straight on.
